A garbage disposal is one of the most useful appliances in a modern kitchen, taking care of daily food scraps and keeping your sink drain flowing clearly. However, flipping the wall switch only to hear a dull, low-pitched buzzing or humming noise—while the blades fail to rotate—is a common problem.

3. Seized Motor Bearings from Corrosion
If a garbage disposal sits idle for an extended period—such as during a long vacation or in a vacant home—water and residual food acids inside the grind chamber can cause the steel motor shaft and internal bearings to rust.

4. Failed Motor Capacitor or Worn Motor Windings
Electric motors in disposals rely on a start capacitor to give the rotor an initial boost of rotational torque. If the capacitor fails due to an electrical power surge or age, the motor will lack the torque necessary to start spinning, resulting in a continuous hum.
Similarly, if the motor’s copper internal windings break down from years of heavy use, the motor loses power and must be replaced.
